Transforaminal Lumbar Epidural Injection

What Does Transforaminal Mean?

Transforaminal injections are similar to what are known as selective nerve root blocks. The "foramen" is the opening between vertebrae, on the side of the spine where nerve roots are found. Transforaminal therefore describes the way that a long lasting, anti-inflammatory steroid and a bit of local anesthetic is injected into the back to reduce inflammation and irritation to nerves. It is thought to be somewhat more "specific" to the nerve root affected than a regular epidural injection.

How is a Transforaminal Injection Performed?

Like a regular Lumbar Epidural Injection, Transforaminal Injections performed by Los Angeles Pain Management Specialist Dr. Ryan Peterson, involve injecting medication via needle through the skin. This nonsurgical outpatient procedure may require a local anesthetic, or a small sedative dose. You will lie on your stomach and an X-ray machine will illuminate the precise area where the medication will be injected in order to target the nerves responsible for your pain.

Should I Have Transforaminal Injections?

Men and women throughout Southern California who suffer from things such as a disc herniation in the lumbar region, disc degeneration, lumbar spinal stenosis, compression fractures, or sciatica are typical candidates for Transforaminal Epidural Injections.

Do Transforaminal Injections Work?

Patients with sciatica may experience up to 90% pain relief after having Transforaminal Epidural Steroid Injections. These injections also have very few side effects and increase mobility for men and women in Southern California who have reduced quality of life due to back pain, and leg pain. Injections may be given multiple times in a year.

If you suffer from painful sciatica, disc degeneration, herniated discs, or other forms of low back pain and leg pain, you may find relief in nonsurgical Transforaminal Epidural Steroid Injections.
